I Pledge Allegiance
I Pledge Allegiance: An Immigrant Anthology is a play that explores “American identity” from the perspective of immigrants. Through a series of vignettes, the piece showcases the complex and at times disjointed web of race, religion, heritage, and class distinct to the United States. Border interrogations, intimate family conversations, and schoolyard discussions in the play highlight a nuanced American reality. We seek to challenge notions of nationalism in the present global context and ask the question, “What does it mean to be an American?” by also attempting to break down how Americanness is constructed.
